Why Is My Sink Draining Slowly? 6 Common Causes & How to Fix It

Blocked Drains Unblocking Service

A slow-draining sink is one of the most common household plumbing issues — and it usually gets worse over time. Whether it’s the bathroom basin, kitchen sink or utility sink, a blockage can develop gradually from everyday use.

Homes in Weston-super-Mare, Worle, Clevedon, Portishead and nearby areas regularly experience slow drainage due to limescale, grease, soap scum, hair, or trapped debris in the waste system.

The good news? Many slow-drain problems can be fixed quickly once the cause is identified.

1. Hair & Soap Build-Up (Bathroom Sinks)

In bathrooms, hair collects in the waste trap and mixes with soap residue, forming a sticky blockage.

Fix:

  • Remove and clean the basin trap (the U-shaped pipe under the sink)

  • Use a hair hook tool to clear buildup from the drain opening

Avoid chemical drain cleaners — they can damage seals and pipework.

2. Grease & Food Waste (Kitchen Sinks)

In the kitchen, cooking oils, fats and food particles cling to the inside of the waste pipe, gradually reducing water flow.

Fix:

  • Pour boiling water + mild detergent down the drain

  • If the blockage is further along the pipe, use a plunger or call for rodding

Tip: Never pour oil or fat down the sink.

3. Blocked or Dirty Trap (Bottle Trap / P-Trap / S-Trap)

The trap is designed to catch debris. When full, it slows water flow.

Fix:

  • Place a bowl under the trap

  • Unscrew, clean and refit

  • Check seals are aligned when reinstalling to avoid leaks

A simple 5–10 minute maintenance job.

4. Airflow/Vent Issues in the Waste Pipe

If water glugs when draining, the system may not be venting properly.

Fix:

  • Check for blocked air admittance valve (common in modern homes)

  • Replace if stuck or failing

5. Limescale Buildup (Hard Water Areas)

North Somerset has medium to hard water, meaning limescale can narrow pipe bore over time.

Fix:

  • Flushing the waste line

  • Descaling aerators and tap mixers

  • Installing a small water softening filter if necessary

6. Blockage Further Down the Pipe System

If clearing the trap doesn’t solve the issue, the blockage may be:

  • In the pipework inside the wall

  • Under the floor

  • In the external drain run

Fix:

This usually requires professional drain rodding or flushing.

We carry the tools to clear deeper blockages safely without damaging pipework.

When to Call a Professional

Call if:

  • The sink backs up completely

  • The same sink blocks again shortly after clearing

  • You notice a foul smell from the drain

  • More than one fixture drains slowly (indicates blockage further in the line)

These are signs the issue is beyond the trap.
