Creating a More Practical Bathroom
The existing bathroom incorporated a conventional bath, but the family’s requirements had changed.
Stepping over the side of a bath can become inconvenient or difficult for people who require easier access to showering facilities. The customer therefore wanted the bath removed and the available space redesigned around a more practical walk-in shower.
The objective was not simply to replace one bathroom fitting with another. The entire room needed to work together, providing improved accessibility while retaining an attractive appearance appropriate for a modern home.
Removing the Existing Bath
The first stage involved carefully removing the existing bath and exposing the plumbing and surrounding wall areas.
Bath removal frequently reveals sections of wall, pipework and flooring that have not been accessible for many years. This provides an opportunity to assess the area before installing new equipment.
The existing water supplies and waste arrangements were considered as part of preparing the room for the new shower layout.
Preparing the New Shower Area
Once the bath had been removed, the shower area could be properly prepared.
The photographs taken during the project show the installation of specialist water-resistant wall boarding around the shower area before the decorative panels were fitted.
Correct preparation behind finished surfaces is an important part of any shower installation. The attractive final wall finish is only one element of the project; the supporting surfaces beneath it also need to provide a suitable foundation for a long-lasting installation.
Marble-Effect Bathroom Wall Panels
One of the most distinctive features of this North Somerset bathroom renovation is the dramatic grey marble-effect wall panelling.
The panels extend across the main bathroom walls and create a striking contemporary appearance without overwhelming the relatively compact room.
Their large-format design also creates fewer visual joints than traditional small bathroom tiles, contributing to the clean, uninterrupted appearance of the finished shower room.
The natural-looking grey, charcoal and lighter stone patterns work particularly well alongside the black radiator and white sanitaryware.
New Walk-In Shower Installed
The old bath space was transformed into a large walk-in shower using a new shower tray and clear glass screen.
A fixed glass panel helps retain the open appearance of the room while providing an effective showering enclosure.
Compared with climbing into a traditional bath, the new arrangement provides a much simpler approach to everyday showering.
The completed shower incorporates:
- Large shower tray
- Clear glass screen
- Modern shower fittings
- Marble-effect waterproof wall finish
- Carefully sealed edges and junctions
The result is practical without creating an institutional appearance—an important consideration when accessibility and good bathroom design need to work together.
Slimline Basin & Modern WC
Space is particularly valuable in a bathroom where improved movement and accessibility are priorities.
A slimline basin with contemporary vanity unit was therefore installed alongside a modern WC.
The narrower basin provides essential everyday functionality without projecting excessively into the room.
Using appropriately sized bathroom furniture can make a significant difference to how comfortable a smaller bathroom feels.
New Flooring
The flooring was also incorporated into the overall bathroom makeover.
The warm wood-effect finish contrasts effectively against the strong marble pattern of the wall panels while helping soften the appearance of the room.
Visually, it creates a warmer and more domestic environment while helping the white sanitaryware and dark radiator stand out.
Contemporary Black Heated Towel Rail
A tall black heated towel radiator was incorporated into the renovated bathroom.
The black finish complements the darker detailing within the marble-effect wall panels and creates an attractive contrast against the surrounding surfaces.
It also provides valuable towel warming and heating within the room without taking up unnecessary floor space.

The Finished Bathroom
The completed transformation is substantial.
What had previously been a conventional bathroom with a bath has become a modern walk-in shower room designed around the family’s practical requirements.
The finished room now benefits from:
- Easier-access showering
- Large walk-in shower
- Clear glass shower screen
- Contemporary marble-effect wall panels
- Modern WC
- Space-saving vanity basin
- New flooring
- Black heated towel radiator
- Improved use of available bathroom space
The project demonstrates how practical accessibility improvements can be incorporated into a bathroom without compromising on appearance or contemporary design.
Bathroom Adaptations Without Making a Bathroom Look Clinical
An important consideration for many families is that an easier-to-use bathroom should still feel like part of their home.
Accessibility does not automatically mean a bathroom needs to look clinical.
With careful planning, features such as larger shower areas, appropriate sanitaryware and more accessible layouts can be incorporated into a modern bathroom design.
This Pill project is a good example.
The practical reason for replacing the bath helped determine the layout, while the marble-effect wall panels, contemporary vanity unit, glass shower screen and black radiator created the character of the finished room.
